A quick closet cleanup is a great way to start the New Year off right, after all everyone has to get dressed in the morning.  Why not make it as easy as possible! Dedicate a weekend to organizing your closet using my tips below.

1. Freebies
We probably all could use more space (and definitely more organization) when it comes to our closets.  Freebies or giveaways such as promotional tees, canvas bags, and tchotchkes should all be donated, repurposed or thrown out.  Save your closet space for items you love!

2. Old Shoeboxes
As much as we love opening a newly purchased pair of shoes with its pristine shoe box, the fact is by keeping them, they are just taking up space.  Even the resale stores don’t want them!  Most shoe boxes are recyclable or they can be repurposed to store odds and ends around the house such as buttons or used for school projects.  Don’t take up your precious closet space!

3. Anything Uncomfortable
If you find any piece of clothing or pair of shoes that is uncomfortable, it’s almost guaranteed to end up in the back of the closet, forgotten and unused.  Life is too short to wear something that is restricting where you can’t move freely or shoes that give you blisters and just plain hurt! It doesn’t matter if you paid a crazy amount of money for it, just let it go!

4. Anything Damaged Beyond Repair
All clothes, purses, shoes and accessories have a lifespan, which can be extended with proper care.  However, sometimes things just get over used or ruined.  Perhaps there is a hole in the bottom of your shoe or the hem is ripped out on your favorite pair of slacks, if so, these can be revived by a shoe repair person or good tailor.  But if your white blazer has yellowed over time and has stains then it’s time to once again, let it go!

5. Anything That Doesn’t Belong There
Oftentimes our closets can become a catch-all for various things that just don’t belong there.  Don’t let it become a dumping ground!  Remove anything that doesn’t enable you to get dressed efficiently.  This can include mementos, paperwork, books, the list can go on and on.  Make sure your closet is all about the clothes, your shoes and of course the purses and accessories!
